German Education

The German education system differs from some of the other countries in the region in that students get free higher education if they prove that they are qualified. The eligibility is decided based on the various certificates that a student acquires during his or her years of schooling. All students, however, are required to compulsorily complete at least nine years of schooling under the German education system. After nine years, some schools offer students the choice of an apprenticeship along with higher studies. Elementary and secondary schools are public and are free to all.

The German education system considers education to be the responsibility of the states and hence, there may be differences in the process from state to state. The origin of the German education system can be traced back to the Middle Ages when church schools were the norm. The first university was established back in the 14th century and at the time the focus of education was on the classics and religion. But by the 18th century all this changed and school and church were separated. This was when school came under the state.

It takes about seven years for a student to complete his or her university studies under the German education system. If pursuing an advanced degree it will mean a few more years of study. There are numerous provisions for financial assistance which makes higher education accessible to all. Rather than have a group of extraordinary universities, certain institutes have departments which excel in their field. But campus life is not all that exciting and the athletics departments also are not particularly noteworthy.

Most students live off campus. However, education in Germany is much cheaper compared to many other countries including the US. Hence, the country is a fast growing destination for many international students and its appeal increases each day.
