Alternative High School

Alternative high school also known as mini school or remedial school is an established private or public secondary school. Better or not but alternative high school offers a suppler program of study in comparison to a traditional school.

In 1970, measures were taken to establish alternative high school as a substitute to conventional classroom structure. Alternative high schools inspire students to know more about a variety of philosophies and teaching procedures having strict political, scholarly, or philosophical point of reference. Alternative high school options are more suitable for those who are tired of coping up with certain aspects of traditional form of education.

Alternative high school functions under the supervision of larger school or institution. In United States, alternative high school is specifically a type, which offers alternative education. Under such circumstances, it can be considered that these types of schools are institutions built to deal with students having acute behavioral problems or it may also be a school with remarkable remedial course of actions.

Alternative high school teaches all principal subjects along with Business, Computers, Language, Health and Physical education. It is mandatory for students who are interested of being admitted in alternative high schools to pass Regent examinations. When one lacks the confidence to be successful under a traditional educational system, he may seek refuge in an alternative high school system. A student who has dropped out or has the high risk of failing will eagerly want to be a part of alternative high school.

The concept of alternative high school was much popularized by Swiss humanitarian Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, the American transcendentalists Amos Bronson Alcott, Ralph Waldo, Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. The originators of progressive education John Dewey and Francis Parker along with educational pioneers like Maria Montessori and Rudolf Steiner emphasized that education must be considered as the art of humanizing, the emotional, spiritual, psychological, moral and physical aspects of a growing and developing infant.

Moreover, according to anarchists like Leo Tolstoy education through alternative high school is a vital force for political liberation, secularism and the apposite riddance of class distinction and racial discrimination.

In the year 1996, the alternative high school for the first time opened its gates to backward students who were unable to cope up with traditional learning formats. In the year 2000, the alternative high school got its recognition from the Illinois State Board of Education and it was in the year 2005 that the school got its accreditation through North Central Association Commission on accreditation and school improvement.

However, for such accreditation and to reach to a high status, the program of alternative high school needs to be evaluated by a host of external professionals. Alternative high school is a credit-based institution and it deals with core academic subjects along with computer instructions.

The classes of alternative high school take place for five days in a week during a regular school year in addition to a summer session. After the successful completion of the sessions, the school offers a wide range of recreational and academic opportunities in assisting budding youths to sharpen their skills and secure support for further success in life.

Simply put, alternative high school is meant for the overall progress and well being of a developing child.
