Charter Schools
Charter schools are schools in which are somewhat affiliated with the public school system, but operate on their own level. Charter schools often have their own hiring practices, develop and teach their own type of curriculum and may even have their own standards for grading, testing and graduation requirements.
With more parents being unsatisfied with the public school system in their area, more people are turning to charter schools to educate their children. Currently, there are over 3,600 individual charter schools across the United States and these schools educated over a million children. In fact, in the 2005-2006 school year, new 256 charter schools in several states opened.
If you want to look into taking your child to a charter school, there are many important considerations to make. The first thing you should consider is how the school is run by the staff. You should visit the school to see if the basics (such as reading, writing and math) are being taught at the appropriate level. You also want to make sure the school is engaging your child in physical activity, art and music skills. More importantly though, is that you need to consider whether or not your state has tight restrictions on charter schools. When the state has tough standards, the school will have a higher success rate.
