The research type is based on academic research that has or can be published and contributes towards further knowledge in the subject of study. It is awarded after the successful submission of a research dissertation or thesis. However, it is possible to achieve this when a work of literature has been published that meets the same academic standards.

The honorary type of doctorate education is based on a person's research achievements in their chosen area of study, whether it is academic in nature or not. This can either be a published or none published work.

The professional doctorate education is based on a specific area of study in their profession. It does not have to relate to any academics or academic research currently being undertaken. Some examples of this are the expansion of knowledge related to medicine and law.

In all cases, the successful recipient is able to use the coveted title of doctor preceding their name. Doctorate education awards in research allow the recipient to also put Ph.D., or doctor of philosophy after their name, followed by the appropriate area of research. However, universities like Oxford still use the more traditional version, D. Phil. In the area of science, Harvard University uses Sc.D. However, irregardless of these exceptions, all doctorate education awards are recognized worldwide.
