High School Wrestling
If you have the job of coaching high school wrestling, then you are heading into an interesting, but challenging opportunity. Here are some tips on how to be a great wrestling coach.
When training kids for high school wrestling, the key is to give them as much feedback as possible on their techniques. Kids learn the most from doing, and that is true in sports, as well as school. Encourage your high school team to attend college-level wrestling events in your area, to learn from wrestlers that have more skill than they do.
One thing that you can do to make your high school wrestling team the best it can be is to host summer camps at your school, if you have permission. Encourage the members of your team to attend the school. This will give them some opportunity to train during the off-season. You can also send those on your team who are serious about the sport of wrestling to go to summer training camps.
Be firm with the kids. Do not let your high school wrestling team run you over. Make your instruction interesting and fun, though, so the kids stay in tune with it. Makes sure every practice session contains some practice with one on one wrestling. This is best incorporated at the end of practice, but do not skip it.
Do not be afraid to use videos of highly skilled wrestlers in your practice sessions. Wrestling is one sport that is enhanced through observation. Point out the skills the players on the video are using. By incorporating these tips, you will be able to plan an excellent year for your wrestling team.
