Middle School Teacher

A middle school teacher is responsible for nurturing the children through deeper understanding of the subjects introduced in elementary school. The teachers at this level teach the skills that students would need as they head for college and eventually enter the professional arena. A middle school teacher essentially teaches younger children normally between the grades 5 and 8.

Teaching the children in middle school can be quite difficult. The children in the middle school experience rapid physical and emotional changes that make them vulnerable to different problems. Most of the students indulge in violence, drugs and gang activities. Some of them may not be able to concentrate on the schoolwork due to family responsibilities or other jobs. It is the responsibility of a   middle school teacher to handle such students and ensure their progress.  
 
As a middle school teacher, you would have to teach children from different religious, racial and economic backgrounds. Teaching in middle school is quite different from that of elementary schools. You would have to provide an in-depth knowledge of the subject to your students.

For this, you should specialize in the subject – biology, physics, chemistry, math, history or physical education, Spanish, English or any other subject that you teach. Unlike general math classes of elementary school, in middle school you would have to teach Trigonometry, Algebra and Calculus.     

Responsibilities And Skills Of A Middle School Teacher

In order to be a perfect middle school teacher, you must have certain qualities and perform specific duties. The very first thing that matters is communication; you must able to communicate your ideas to the students clearly. Having a creative bent of mind would help in explaining concepts more tactfully. You need to understand how children learn, grow, and develop, applying these principles pragmatically.  The ability to tackle the crisis situations is also essential.  

As a middle school teacher, you would also have to perform certain duties. You would have to deal with parents, school administrators and, of course, students. You would need to handle the complaints from parents tactfully and politely, write lesson plans for the students, motivate your students to build their career; most importantly, you must keep track of the progress of each student.

In most cases, a middle school teacher is required to have qualifications beyond obtaining a degree. Teaching practices under a certified teacher would always be an added advantage.    

Middle school teaching has long been regarded as 'fall back' profession for those who are not skilled enough to get other high-paying jobs.  However, the situation has undergone a drastic change in the recent past. Middle school teachers now get fat pay packets. 

With the increase in the number of schools, the demand for middle school teachers has also gone up considerably. Great job openings await you if you have specialized in subject areas such as math and science.
