It seems as though ever since higher education existed, the two largest career fields or majors chosen were the medical field and the legal field.  This is still true today, but with so many specialized jobs out there, more and more of the other forms of degrees are taking precedence.  A psychology degree is actually not considered to be medical, but in fact falls under the category of social sciences.  In essence, the study of psychology is the study of human emotion and behavior.  A common myth is that people who receive their psychology degree must go on to become psychiatrists, but this is not always the case.  In fact, because of the ever growing demand for psychology students in other fields, large numbers of people who hold the degree go on to even more specialized fields.   Some popular choices include becoming family counselors, working within the school or nursing home system, or becoming a social worker.

A psychology degree should not limit students to one particular choice when it comes to their desired career.  The need for people with a strong background in the subject is increasing for various reasons.  Large companies want to be sure they are hiring healthy and stable employees.  Schools and other institutions feel more secure having an expert in the field on hand at all times in cases of both emergencies and standard procedures where a psychological expert might be needed.  And of course, the need for those serving in the social services field is ever expanding as well.  Those with a psychology degree actually have a very large selection of rewarding careers to choose from in their particular field.  This makes earning a psychology degree a profitable and smart choice for students who are seeking out a career in the human and social fields.
