School Playground Equipment

Imagine this: an eight year old boy has been sitting in one spot for three hours. He’s tired, he’s bored, and he just wants to get up and move. The problem is - he doesn’t get to.  Sure, he can get up and walk around the class, but what his energetic little legs really need is space, they need to run, they need to jump, they need to get skinned and bruised and used!

Children entering adolescence are at a developmental stage in their lives where their bodies are full of energy. With all the high calorie foods they consume, its no wonder that they feel the need to get up and run around like a Tasmanian devil! Besides that, their metabolisms are racing, burning all those calories. When you sit a child down for hours at a time with the calorie burning going on, you are dealing with a highly combustible package of energy. That is not a good thing. That is where recess and school playground equipment lend a hand.

Recess is an absolutely necessary part of school. Without the proper amount of exercise, all those little minds are going to wander. Exercise encourages brain activity and it’s a well known fact that people who exercise think better and are less tired. Think of what it is like for little kids - it’s that times ten! It has been proven that children are far more attentive after recess.

When it comes to recess, the kinds of activities available to kids should be diverse and plenteous. In recent years, school playground equipment has become a safe and active part of the average school day.  With all sorts of climbing apparatuses, swings, slides, jungle gyms, monkey bars, and sand boxes (some schools opting to discontinue sand box use) kids are going out, getting exercise, and learning to socialize.

Many school districts in the US are saying that recess is a waste of time that can better be spent learning. What they don’t really tell you is that they are worried that other countries are looking down at American children for not knowing everything. They are also worried about law suits concerning broken bones from playing on the school playground equipment. School districts should be honest about what their true agenda is; they want to show off, and not lose money.
