My dad always said “Get the sheepskin”, meaning that we should go through all the work required to get a university degree.  His perspective was gained in a real life experience where his corporate job was taken away when the job description was rewritten to require a university degree.  I now realize his hope was that we would succeed beyond his shortcoming.  I also now suppose most parents must think this way.

Now, to get any degree, from college or university, you have to first apply for admission.  Sometimes courses can be taken before full admission is granted.  Extension, online or community college classes are a popular stepping stone approach and quite often these credits can be applied toward a university degree.  Even credits for military service or some other proficiency are transferable for credit.

After admission, a major is declared and coursework is molded around a program designed to meet requirements for degree issuance.  For example, University of Illinois offers many university degrees, ranging from Public Health to Business Administration.  There online catalog offers on-campus and online degree programs.

It is theoretically possible to get a four year degree in three years, but I would have to say that part of the education comes in the time spent and association with like minded people encountered during those four years.  It is, however, a personal thing and having a university degree program tailored to particular needs is also possible.

Start by making a contact at the school you are considering attending. I live in North Carolina, so I started by contacting the University of North Carolina.

Proceed with clarity of thought and decisiveness in purpose and goal orientation; there won’t be any internal or external obstacles that can stop you for long.  It took me ten years but I finally got that sheepskin!
