Assessment for Learning
Using evaluation methods in the classroom in order to boost the achievements of students is the basis for assessment for learning. The idea is that students will best improve when they understand the purpose of their education as well as where they stand now in terms of that purpose and how they can best achieve that purpose.
Another way to understand is that this assessment for learning is the continual daily evaluation which is necessary to collect information. This information will give insight into what the students do and do not understand as well as how teaching methods could be adapted to address this knowledge. To conduct this assessment each day, there would be useful questioning of the students as well as observations of student actions during both teaching lessons and work time. Discussions would be held with the students as well as engaging students in conducting tests and giving them fast feedback into their performance.
Assessment for learning should be a part of every teacher’s plan for the classroom and therefore should be viewed as an important skill they should acquire. In addition, this special assessment should zero in on how the students learn as well as be an integral part of the daily classroom schedule.
Constructive guidance should be presented sensitively to minimize emotional influences as well as provide positive practical guidance for areas of improvement. Assessment for learning also should work toward developing self-assessment qualities in students so that they can then recognize what they should be doing next in order to achieve a particular goal.
Finally, educators who use assessment for learning in the classroom should be able to learn what motivates students to learn as well as recognize how they learn. Recognizing the broad spectrum of achievements of each of the students, no matter their learning style and speed is also important.
