Assessment of Student Learning

There are major changes occurring in terms of assessment of student learning at the same time that the very standards and structure of testing, curriculum and more are evolving as well. There is some shift of focus to individualized evaluation standards which not only serve to create a successful classroom but also translates to generalized success when comparing against the school and other norms.

Assessment of student learning is a vital part of every education institution’s efforts to gauge overall effectiveness of received education. Therefore, it is important that any evaluations on learning be intertwined with instruction and curriculum in the classroom. There are lofty goals at every school which stems from the fact that a strong foundation in education is needed in the first place before high standards can be set or met.

In order to get an accurate assessment of student learning, educators should not focus necessarily on compliance but rather commitment and adherence to the core values and mission of learning in the classroom. So, peer reviews of student performance should be examined without any preconceived notions of how results should be. They should approach the evaluation in a more generalized way, focusing on just the performance results of students to ensure that they are complying with the set standards and measurement practices of that particular educational institution rather than a comparison to other entities.

When it comes to assessment of student learning, it is important to realize that it is an ongoing and ever-changing process. This process takes time and is not always a continuing time but a time abbreviated with hiccups as the bugs and kinks are worked out of it. Therefore, it is important to have solid leadership and commitment from the educational leaders when it comes to nailing down a definite assessment of student learning process. It is important to note that each educational institution will not approach these assessments in quite the same way or in the same time frame either.
