Degrees
A degree should not be viewed as simply a piece of paper; it is the most valuable document that can change the course of your life. Sure, there are exceptions like Bill Gates who was a high school dropout and went on to make history and earn fame and fortune, but these are exceptions. Such cases are few and far between and while they do exist, high school students shouldn’t bank on them to get ahead in life.
Commitment
To a prospective employer, a degree is not just a piece of paper either; it shows that you had the commitment, willingness, ability and opportunity to spend four or more years of your life dedicated to a mission. It shows that your degree is a means to an end and that getting a job in the field you have chosen is going to be the first step on the ladder to success.
Self Confidence
Getting a degree also is a pat on the back for your self confidence and esteem. It proves to yourself that yes, you could do it. You worked hard and you have earned it. Your degree is not your first class ticket to the top of the corporate hierarchy, but it will definitely help to get your foot in the door.
Several studies have been conducted that show employers preferring to interview candidates who have degrees as opposed to those who do not. While the latter may get an opportunity through connections or pure luck, they have to prove themselves much more than someone who has a degree. Where you get your degree obviously has its own perks, and the more reputed schools and colleges have special placement offices that help your jumpstart your career. However, even if you are not Ivy League material, work towards getting a degree; it will change your life and that of those around you. Good luck!
