Drivers Education
Obtaining a driver’s license is often a rite of passage for teenagers and young adults and signals a foray into adulthood and a new found sense of independence. However, along with the privilege and benefits that come with driving, also comes a great responsibility to practice safe driving techniques for the benefit of fellow motorists and pedestrians. Many states require a drivers education class to be completed before a road licensing test can even be administered. For instance, New York State requires permit holders to complete a five and a half hour drivers education course before taking the final test to procure a drivers license. This drivers education course covers many topics from drunk driving prevention to defensive driving techniques as well as reiterating the rules of the road and any laws which may be applicable in the state which will issue the license.
However, drivers education courses are not limited to those who are applying for their first drivers license. Many states, cities and municipalities offer drivers education courses to those drivers who want to brush up on the rules of the road. In fact, many insurance companies will offer a discount to those drivers who have attended a recent drivers education or defensive driving course. Although most drivers education courses require a fee to attend, the discounted insurance savings often saves the motorist money above and beyond that which was initially paid for the course.
In addition to any financial incentives an insurance company may offer, periodically attending a drivers education course is a good idea to refresh a driver’s memory on certain rules and regulations as well as providing helpful defensive driving tips and techniques which may help avoid an accident. In conjunction with informative films and readings, an instructor may also lecture the class and conduct group exercises to illustrate some of the various points covered.
