English Learning

The English Language
The English language is a West Germanic language originating in England.  It is the first language for most people in Australia, Canada, the Commonwealth Caribbean, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America which is also commonly known as the Anglo sphere). It is used broadly as a second language and as an official language throughout the entire world and especially in Commonwealth countries and in many international organizations.

English is the dominant international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy.  The influence of the British Empire is the primary reason for the initial spread of the language far beyond the British Isles. Subsequent to World War II, the increasing economic and cultural influence of the United States has considerably increased the reach of the language.

English Learning in Schools
One of the greatest challenges that schools in America face is attempting to educate and communicate properly with a large and growing population of children and adults who cannot speak English.

The Department of Education approximates that 2.4 million children, who largely includes Hispanic children, have restricted ability in English.  Some suggest that the children be taught in their native language, however, it is assumed to believe that being taught in their native language may be of less help to them than to be taught in the English language.

Instead of bilingual education, it is believed by some that English instruction holds the least risk and usually the greatest benefit for limited-English-proficient children and adults. “

However, outside the question of the effectiveness of bilingual education, lies the question of what parents of limited-English-proficient children really want for their own children; as well as for themselves because many of them do not speak proficiently in English.
