Geography Lesson Plans
Remember back in the days when students were forced to memorize the state capitols by rote memorization? Or when the teachers droned on and on about the seven continents. It was boring and students back then probably did not retain a lot of that information. Maybe that is why so many Americans do poorly at geography. If you are responsible for teaching this subject, then you need to consider what you can do to your geography lesson plans to keep your students interested. Geography is interesting, so here are some ideas for planning your geography lesson plans.
For Elementary Students:
When it comes to geography and the elementary student, it is very important to include very basic geography facts into the geography lesson plans. Students at this age get a good foundation to build upon as they progress. When you plan your lessons, make sure you find topics that grab their attention. For example, when you talk about the location of the continents, they will enjoy learning about each place. If you are learning about Egypt, then why not give them a hands-on project, such as learning about building pyramids or the mummification process. Interesting movies are also popular for your geography lesson plans at this age. The Magic Treehouse books series can be added to your curriculum as well.
For Middle School Students:
When students get into middle school, they will begin learning more in-depth information about world geography. Mapping is an important skill and you can find plenty of geography lesson plans that will help teach your students this skill. Interactive projects are the most popular at this age and students will love working in groups with their friends.
There are many wonderful ideas that you can include in your geography lesson plans when you teach this subject. As long as your students are enjoying and learning from your class, you are doing your job.
