High School Curriculum

With so much violence and peer pressure present in the schools, some parents have chosen to remove their children from this environment and home school. At one point, homeschooling had a negative stigma. Often times, homeschooled children were seen as socially inept or withdrawn. Fortunately, times have changed and there is plenty of support for parents and children. Thus, children can interact and socialize with other homeschoolers and learn people skills. What’s more, many states and school systems support home school education and provide recommended curriculums. If homeschooling a high school student, picking the best curriculum can be a challenge.  Parents want their children to thrive and be fully prepared for college. With this said, they can choose from a variety of high school curriculum options.

Before picking a high school curriculum for a home school student, first determine whether the child will complete basic high school courses or advance courses. Advance courses include subjects such as honors English and history, plus applied courses and advance mathematics. On the other hand, your child may prefer to stick with basic high school courses – English, math, science, history, and elective courses. There is a high school curriculum to accommodate both needs, and both satisfy the high school requirement. Students who choose an advance diploma are required to complete more credits. In some instances, the additional classes can be applied toward college credits.

With any high school curriculum, students are required to select a certain number of elective courses. These courses can include a foreign language, music, art, business course, etc. Completing such courses can be difficult for home school students. However, with support from parents, tutors, and other resources, homeschoolers can earn a good grade in their elective classes. Driver’s education classes are also included in a high school curriculum. To complete this requirement, home school students must take driving classes with a private instructor or school.
