Italian Learning

The Italian Language
The Italian language is a Romance language spoken by approximately 63 million people largely in Italy. In the country Switzerland, Italian is one of four official spoken languages. Italian is also the authorized language of San Marino and the Vatican City.

The Italian language is also spoken by some in former Italian colonies in Africa (Libya, Somalia and Eritrea). Though, its use has greatly diminished ever since the colonial period.  In addition, Italian was the language of instruction in Eritrea during the colonial period and as of 1997, there is only one Italian language school remaining, with almost 500 students.

Standard Italian was adopted by the state after the confederation of Italy.  The Italian language is based on Tuscan dialect and is moderately intermediate between the Southern and Northern Italo-Dalmatian languages dialects of the North.

In most Romance languages, stress of certain syllables is distinctive.  Unlike the majority of other Romance languages, Italian has preserved the distinction between short and long consonants which existed in Latin. Of all the Romance languages, Italian is judged to be most similar to Latin in terms of vocabulary.
